Painting for Extreme Weather

Painting for Extreme Weather

Painting the exterior of your home is a project that requires you to do everything by the book. The painting contractor and the type of exterior paint used plays an important role in protecting your home from the elements. This is especially important for Boston exterior painting projects where strong winds, high humidity, and icy cold winter temperatures can quickly put your home at risk. At Optimus Painting and Restoration, not only the beauty, but also the safety of your home is our priority. Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting your Greater Boston painting contractor: It’s an absolute necessity to thoroughly prepare the exterior surface your home prior to applying a coat of paint. Good prep is the secret to making sure that your exterior painting project will hold up for years to come, and good prep requires a contractor with the right tools, such as: Carbide scrapers that keep a razor sharp edge even after scraping an entire house. State of the art sanding equipment that effectively contains hazardous dust. And, of course, a power washer, to remove any mold or dirt from the exterior surface of your home before painting. Furthermore, good exterior prep requires an expert’s knowledge of materials. For example, there are many different types of exterior patching compounds. Some are only appropriate for filling small nail or screw holes, and if they are used to cheaply fill a large hole, say, in a window sill, they will quickly crack and fall out due to the extremes of temperature and moisture in New England. However, there are other patching compounds... read more
Exterior Painting, Ice Cream, and an Investment

Exterior Painting, Ice Cream, and an Investment

I spied a truck pulling up to the neighbor’s house and watched as the crew began work tidying up the small colonial on our block. I began to feel a little impatient as I was waiting to start our own exterior paint job. Later that same day a friend called saying that a customer of ours called her and excitedly exclaimed, “The painters are here! The painters are here!” As an adult, having a contractor show up is a little like a child seeing the ice cream truck pulling onto their street. You’ve been waiting, and they’re finally here. It’s such a relief to finally see the work get started. When choosing ice cream it’s easy to figure out if you’ll like what’s behind the wrapper. With painting contractors, it’s a little trickier. Case and point: we were called to give a painting estimate in Hopkinton. This beautiful house had just been painted a few years ago, but was showing unusual wear and tear. When we began to scrape, the paint began coming off in sheets. The previous painters wanted to do a quick and dirty job and improperly prepped and primed the house. This customer only two years later is paying to scrape and paint the entire house AGAIN! If you’re in the Boston area or the Metro West and in need of residential painting, there is still time to squeeze in that exterior job. Consider us if you need to repaint your trim or even scrape and change your paint color. With Optimus Painting, you are making an investment. Rest assured that the job will be done... read more
Residential Paint Color of the Year

Residential Paint Color of the Year

On the early morning ferry to Nantucket, I peeked out the porthole and saw the beautiful gray-green waves foaming and splashing and the first thought that sprang to mind was paint. Not just any paint, but C2’s luminous neutral, Dorian Gray. Granted, I think of residential paint more than the average person, but I am truly captivated by it. Choosing colors for your home interior can be a daunting process, and after much consideration we chose Dorian Gray for our bedroom walls (Benjamin Moore’s Quiet Moments was at the top of the list, but we love the quality of C2 paints). C2 promised, “Like glittering sunlight on sparkling sand or the lustrous glow of a pearly shell, each of our handcrafted colors contains its own shimmering spectrum. The use of 16 unique artist-grade pigments results in unparalleled reflectivity, radiance and luminosity.” And, they delivered. I’m enchanted. We spent the first few days remarking, depending on the time of day and the light, on the colors that were peeking through: gray, pale-green, or steely-blue. The room feels serene, peaceful and elegant. It’s the perfect color for a wide open space or a room where tranquility is paramount. I consider it our interior paint color of the year for 2013. Just like Oscar Wilde’s protagonist, this color never gets old. -Melanie Sabtchev  ... read more

Refreshed Wall Texture

Refreshed Wall Texture

In older Boston homes we routinely encounter a variety of textures that must be removed or changed prior to adding a new coat of paint. Some textures are more difficult to remove than others, and occasionally  preparation will require more time than the painting itself. Yet this additional time is crucial to a good finish. With proper preparation, our painters are able to deliver unparalleled precision in our painting, which is the kind of quality our customers have come to expect from the Optimus Painting crew. If you look closely at the ‘before’ photographs below, you can see that the walls are covered with heavy paint drips and an unsightly rough texture. The previous painters made several serious mistakes: They “removed” wallpaper but failed to wash the glue off the walls before painting. They “removed” wallpaper, but not all of it! There were many bits of the wallpaper’s backing still stuck to the walls and trim. When they painted they decided to tape the trim and presumably felt that this gave them license to smear the paint on heavily, and unevenly, producing sags and drips all over the walls. All of these mistakes combined make for a horrible wall finish. In cases like this it is necessary to skim-coat the walls in order to restore them to their former pleasant evenness. Skim-coating involves scraping major high spots and loose plaster off of the walls, applying several, successively thinner, layers of dura-bond, before sanding the walls smooth and painting. Furthermore, we remove as much of the old paint from the trim as we can, by carefully scraping it away, and... read more
